Pam Goldsberry is a registered nurse with more than twenty five years of hospital and travel nursing, specialising in labor and delivery. She holds Indiana RN license 28206515A and is certified as a CPR instructor through both the American Heart Association and the American Red Cross. She founded Tiny Hearts CPR to teach families the skills she has spent her career using.

What twenty five years in labor and delivery teaches you

Labor and delivery is one of the few places in a hospital where the patient can go from perfectly well to needing resuscitation in under a minute, and where the person needing it weighs seven pounds. Pam has started newborn hearts. She knows what a baby in trouble looks like before the monitors say so, and she knows how much force a small chest actually takes, which is the single thing every parent gets wrong when they imagine doing this.

That is the difference between being taught CPR by an instructor and being taught it by a nurse. When someone in the room asks what if I break something, the answer is not a line from a manual.

The stranger at the gas station

Pam has performed CPR outside a hospital, on a stranger, in a real emergency. No crash cart, no team, no monitor telling her what the rhythm was. She talks about it in class because it makes a point she cannot make any other way, which is that the person who ends up doing CPR is almost never the person who expected to.

Why she started teaching families

She kept meeting new parents who had been handed a baby and no training. The hospital classes were full, or scheduled at times nobody with a newborn can make, or so clinical that people left more frightened than when they arrived. Meanwhile the grandmother who watches the baby two days a week had never been offered anything at all.

So she started bringing the class to the living room instead. Pam calls the CPR party concept a God idea, and she is not being cute about it. It is why she does this at the price she does, with ten seats instead of one.
